January 11, 1915- Col. Jacob Ruppert and Col. Tillinghast L’Hommedieu Huston purchase the Yankees for Alex Rodriquez’s weekly salary of $465,000.
April 20, 1928- At the height of Prohibition, Yankee Stadium’s left field stands are enlarged to three decks so fans can hide the booze.
September 25, 1929- Miller Huggins, who guided the Yanks to three World Series titles, dies from blood posioning. Though MLB was battling a problem with Vampires at the time, autopsies performed on Huggins state they were not involved in the death.
November 21, 1934- The San Francisco Seals sell “Mr. Coffee” Joe Dimaggio to the Yankees for $50,000.
July 4, 1939- “Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day” is held and the Iron Horse gives his memorable “Luckiest Man on the face of the Earth speech.” Abe Wyles from 125th Street, not so lucky, he was taking a dump during the speech and missed the ceremony.
July 17, 1941- Joe D. goes hitless in three at-bats in a game. This game takes place in between two really long hit streaks.
December 13, 1956- Yogi Berra’s wife gives birth to Dale Berra. Yogi stated, “You can observe a lot by watching.” Dale Berra would go on to break Dick Sisler’s record for most games played by the son of a Hall of Famer.
December 20, 1972- Yankee Pitchers Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich do their 1970′s best and swap wives. Fritz would later go on to marry Kekich’s wife Susanne, while Mike couldn’t get past third base with Marilyn.
April 6, 1973- Ron Blomberg becomes the first Jewish DH when he becomes MLB’s first ever DH. Future Cigar Salesman Luis Tiant walked Blomberg in the historic AB at Fenway.
August 1, 1975- Billy Martin joins the Yankees for his first of five stints as Yankee manager.
October 18, 1977- Plans for the “Bucky Bar,” a delicious, chocolately nougat bar are brought to a screeching halt when Reggie Jackson launches three World Series homers in one game against the Dodgers. “Reggie Bars” fly off the shelves quicker than you can say Wonka.
June 12, 1981- Under the guise of a Labor Dispute, MLB begins a “Strike” and stops play until July13. In actuality, MLB cancels over 713 games to deal with its persistant vampire problem. After Vampires were purged from all dugouts, the Yanks went on to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics before losing to the Dodgers in six.
July 24, 1983- A post-hemorrhoidal George Brett goes ballistic as his two-run homer against the Yankees sparks the infamous “Pine Tar Incident.”
March 27, 1989- A balding Steve Balboni is traded back to the New York Yankees. Balboni remains the only player in baseball history to win a World Series as a Kansas City Royal, but not as a Yankee. Balboni still holds the record for homeruns in a single season for K.C. with 36. In five years with the Yankees he hit 41 homers.
June 21, 1989- The Yankees send their all-time stolen base leader Rickey Henderson (326) back to the Oakland Athletics for Luis Polonia, Eric Plunk, and Greg Cadaret.
August 12, 1994- Don Mattingly’s finest chance at a World Series ring comes to an end when MLB cancels the remainder of the season and the Fall Classic to deal with their recurring Vampire problem. At 70-43 the Pinstripes looked primed to take on the NL best 74-40 Montreal Expos.
September 1998- Shane Spencer does his best Kevin Maas impersonation and hits a lot of homeruns in the final month of the season. Unlike Maas, Spencers homers are actually helpful in winning a World Series title.
January 31, 2002- Suzyn Waldman joins the YES network. OH My Goodness!
March 12, 2002- Ruben Rivera, Mariano’s cousin, is voted off the Yankee Island by teammates for allegedly stealing one of Derek Jeter’s gloves and selling it for $2,500. Rivera, who was part of the 1996 World Championship team, was at Spring Training trying to win back a spot on the Yankee roster.
May 16, 2008- Mired in .181 post-steroid slump $23.4 million superstar Jason Giambi admits to wearing a golden thong to cure his hitting woes.
